Iron Your Prints: The Secret to Silky-Smooth Top Layers

Mastering “Ironing” for Smooth Top Layers

What It Is:

“Ironing” is a slicer feature (found in Cura, PrusaSlicer, etc.) that makes the nozzle go back over the top layer while extruding a tiny amount of filament or just "ironing" with a hot nozzle. This melts and flattens the plastic, filling in gaps and giving a super smooth surface finish.

Why It’s Valuable:

  • Polishes top layers for professional-quality prints

  • Reduces visible layer lines and grooves

  • Ideal for display parts, logos, or anything customer-facing

How to Use It:

  • In Cura: Enable it under Experimental > Enable Ironing

  • Key settings to tweak:

    • Ironing Pattern: Zig-zag gives best coverage

    • Flow Rate: Start around 10–15%

    • Speed: Keep it low (~15–20 mm/s)

    • Only on Top Layers: Saves time and keeps print functional

Best For:

  • PLA and PETG prints with visible top surfaces

  • Product prototypes

  • Customized nameplates, tags, or lids
